Summary
Sociopath or revenge seeker?
A life of suffering and abuse shaped David Carter as a child. Two tours of Afghanistan honed him into a cold-blooded killer. Following his discharge from the Army, David re-starts his life, establishing a thriving drug operation on Victoria’s Bellarine Peninsula. What does he do when challenged by rival drug operatives? He coldly eliminates them as he did the Taliban. His relatives vanish. Three at first, then another and another. The Police come asking questions, and David is evasive. With a lucky break in the investigation and newfound knowledge of David’s childhood abuse, he becomes the main suspect. As suspicion mounts, he flees Australia but returns to clean up a loose end. This decision proves to be fateful. Injured and desperate, he is pursued across Australia. The Family Cleaner is an exhilarating and evocative tale of revenge.
Let's talk about it
Tell us something about yourself that not many people know.
I’m a frustrated guitar player, who never has enough time to practice. That’s an excuse. It’s the same with the Didgeridoo. I get pleasure from both instruments but find ways to not work on them.
Why did you choose the themes in your book and were you aware of them from the start?
The theme came from my penchant to cheer for the underdog, the wronged person. That said, I’m not sure one can cheer for David, but secretly being able to deal with bullies like he does appeals in a way.
How difficult was it for you to write this book? Did you face any obstacles?
Not really, just keeping focus and tracking the characters. Trying to remember all the do’s when it comes to character, plot, etc. and of course the hundreds of don’ts.
Author Bio
I have a BA (Accounting) Degree and my career spanned Finance, IT, Knowledge and Change management. Elements of this experience helped me with writing, but not a great deal.
Writing a story has always been on my bucket list, and after a nudge from my partner in the form of a gift of a creative writing course, I started my first manuscript at the start of the COVID lockdown. I have completed two — The Chinese Doll and The Family Cleaner. I’m working on two others.
Regarding writing credentials, I completed two creative writing short courses and a coaching class with AJ Collins, related to the first few chapters of the first manuscript. Additionally, the feedback from beta readers, copy editors and proofreaders has informed my later work.
Writing is a pleasure. I love the process the freedom and the outcome.
