Summary

Two brothers. One puppy. And the start of something special.

Clancy likes to be in charge. Rusty never listens. Together, they’re the Dirt Eaters – and they’re always up for an adventure.

When the boys discover a scared little puppy hiding in a rubbish bin, everything changes. They take him home, name him Dash, and before they know it, he’s running, licking, chasing balls … and stealing their hearts.

But when a big storm hits, Dash needs them more than ever.

Welcome to the Family is the first book in The Dirt Eaters series – a warm, funny and relatable story about growing up, looking after others and discovering that family sometimes finds you when you least expect it.

Let's talk about it

Tell us something about yourself that not many people know.
I often sneak out at night for a midnight snack of chocolate biscuits

Why did you choose the themes in your book and were you aware of them from the start?
The themes are based on adventures from my childhood. It was pre screens and you had to make your own fun and adventures.

How difficult was it for you to write this book? Did you face any obstacles?
After writing Cottonwood Adventures it was quite easy and I knew how to write by this stage, as in I had my own style. I love writing the adventures and often giggle as I do.

Do you always write in this genre or do you like to break out of the box?
Kids books is all I’ve ever done. I don’t have any experience in anything else. I have been asked though to pen an adult’s series which I may or may not do.

What are your writing habits or idiosyncrasies?
When I write I don’t like to be disturbed and I often lose myself in the stories. Hours can pass by, feeling like minutes and I often forget to eat.

What would you do differently next time?
I wouldn’t do anything differently. I love how everything has unfolded as I had no expectations to begin with. Everything is a bonus.

With hindsight, what would you say to yourself as a fledgling writer?
Hindsight us a wonderful thing but there is no advice I would give. I have loved every step of the journey and have no expectations, which makes it all the more exciting

If you worked with a professional editor, what was the experience like?
Clark and Makay edited the series and they did a wonderful job. They were very professional and easy to work with.

What’s next for your writing?
What’s next? Probably more Dirteater novels, as I have already been asked by some very enthusiastic readers for some.
